Fish is an excellent food choice for what it doesn’t give you – fat that is bad for your heart. Fish is low in saturated fat (“bad fat”) which can be found in animal sources such as meat, poultry and dairy products and some plant sources (coconut oil, palm oil, palm kernel oil and cocoa butter). Saturated fats have a negative effect on blood cholesterol levels which can increase the risk of heart disease.

All fish contain Omega-3, which is a polyunsaturated fat. It is higher in fattier fish such as salmon, mackerel and herring. Lean fish such as cod, haddock and sole contain lower levels.

Omega-3 fats may help prevent heart disease and stroke because they help keep arteries healthy. Heart attacks and strokes are caused when an artery becomes blocked by a blood clot.
