Celebrating Canada Day from Coast-to-Coast-to-Coast!
That's right. Canada actually has 3 coastlines, even though we usually only think of the east and the west coast, but the Arctic coast is also part of our vast country. All across our great nation, we are celebrating Canada Day with friends and family.
Did you know that Canada Day, July 1st, was originally called Dominion Day and it wasn't a day of celebration until the 1950s? Dominion Day was added to our calendar as a national holiday in 1879. It was a day set aside to commemorate the formation of Canada and the union of the Provinces. It was just a regular "holiday" until 1958, when the festivities we now associate with Canada day – like the activities on Parliament Hill and fireworks, first occurred. In 1982, Dominion Day was officially changed to Canada Day and today we all enjoy this fun-filled holiday in our own special way.
Right across our country, celebrations will be happening on July 1st. The most famous of these celebrations occurs every year in our nation's capital, on Parliament Hill. The festivities run all day long and usually include the Changing of the Guard, the RCMP Musical Ride and a spectacular fireworks display over the Ottawa River. You could head down to the east coast, where folks are celebrating with country music festivals, or check out the action out west, where they're shucking oysters and picnicking in national parks. No matter where you live, there are backyard barbecues followed by trips to the local park to watch mesmerizing shows of professionally organized fireworks. A quick "google" search, or a call to your municipal government offices will let you know what's planned for your area.
As a proud Canadian company, High Liner wishes everyone across this great country a very happy, very safe Canada Day celebration.
